As the custodian of Lesotho’s
economy, the Central Bank of Lesotho is fully
conscious of its social responsibility to the
nation. In this spirit, the Bank adopted a policy
that would guide the granting of minimum assistance
to local and indigenous groups in areas of social
and economic development. These groups include
those that promote rural and disenfranchised
communities, AIDS prevention projects, support for
disadvantaged primary and secondary schools, health
sector with emphasis on the rural health projects,
church hospitals, etc. During the year 2005, the
Bank provided assistance to the following
organisations/institutions:
1. Tsoelike
Secondary School: construction of one class room:
M30 000.00,
2. Pulane
Roman Catholic Primary School: construction of one
class room: M25 405.00,
3. St.
Peter Paul Primary School: construction of one
classroom: M35 625.00,
4. Lesotho
National Federation of Organisations of the Disabled
(LNFOD): top-up on the cost of
two surveys conducted at their site at Rothe for
construction of a Development Centre: M3 850.00,
5. Christian
AIDS Care Organisation: HIV/AIDS prevention
projects:
M7 000.00,
6. Lesotho
Society of the Mentally Handicapped Persons: funds
to buy Christmas presents for the mentally
handicapped persons:
M4 000.00,
7. Rotary
Club of Maloti: funds towards voluntary counseling
and testing centre at St. Joseph Hospital, Roma: M5
120.00,
8.
Sekhele Motimposo No. 30 Support Group: funds
to buy food and clothing for HIV/AIDS orphans: M4
000.00,
9. Qalo
Mission Support Group: funds to buy food and school
uniforms for the destitute children: M6 000.00,
10. Maliba
Support Group: funds to buy food and clothing for
the sick, aged and destitute groups: M4 000.00.
The Bank remains sensitive to the dire needs of the
various communities in Lesotho. In this regard, the
Bank shall continue to contribute, albeit in a small
way, towards the upliftment of various sectors of
our nation.
