It has come to the attention of the Central Bank of Lesotho
that there is a significant decline in the circulation
of the 5 lisente coins, which indicate that they are
generally not being used as a means of transaction.
Furthermore, the Bank has noted that certain businesses
and consumers would not engage in transactions using
these coins. As a result, the public has adopted the
practice of collecting these coins and keeping them.
It is against this background that anyone who has made a
collection of these coins is invited to deliver them to
the Central Bank of Lesotho, in exchange for an amount
equivalent to the total amount of coins so collected.
This measure is taken in an effort to return these coins
to circulation through the financial institutions, and
in accordance with the laws that govern the use of these
coins.
This notice notwithstanding, the public is hereby notified
that these coins continue to be legal tender in Lesotho,
until such time that the Bank, guided by the law, may
see it fit to withdraw them. On this basis therefore,
the Bank wishes to encourage both consumers and
businesses to continue to use them until such time that
the Bank shall advise otherwise.
