Obituary - Former Governor E. M. Matekane

The former Governor of the Central Bank of Lesotho, Mr. Esselen Motlatsi Matekane, passed on in the early hours of Thursday, 22nd April 2010, at the Olivedale Clinic in Johannesburg, South-Africa.

Ntate Matekane was born on 28 September 1945 to Ntate Motsoalisa Paulus Matekane and ‘M’e ‘Mateboho Matekane, in Jaggersfontein, South Africa, where his father was an evangelist. He was the second of seven children (three boys and four girls).

He began his primary education in 1954 in Thabana-Ts’ooana, Makaung, in the Mafeteng District and later attended the Mafeteng Controlled Primary School.  In 1966 he obtained a Cambridge Overseas School Certificate from the Basutoland High School, now known as Lesotho High School.  In 1967 he proceeded to the University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland (UBLS) in Roma, now known as the National University of Lesotho, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. In his quest for more knowledge, he furthered his studies at the Institute of Social Studies (ISS) in Holland, where he obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Statistics and National Accounts.

He first joined the Civil Service of Lesotho in 1971 in the Ministry of Education. He was later transferred to the Bureau of Statistics in 1978 where he worked until October 1987.

Mr. Matekane joined the Central Bank of Lesotho in November 1987, as a Senior Economist in the Department of Economic Research.  In 1993 he was seconded to the Ministry of Economic Planning to serve as Principal Secretary, a post he held until 1997 when he returned to the Central Bank. In May 1998, he was appointed Deputy Governor of the Central Bank.  A year later he left for the United States of America where he obtained a Post Graduate Degree in Economics at the Columbia University.

He was appointed Governor of the Central Bank of Lesotho in 2001 and served in that capacity until 2006 when his five-year term ended. Amongst his several achievements, he will be dearly remembered for his passion in taking the Central Bank to the people through various strategies including radio programmes such as “U TSEBA HAKAE KA MORUO OA NAHA EA HENO?”

In 1971 Mr. Matekane was joined in holy matrimony with ‘Masabata Ts’enoli and the two were blessed with three children:  Ts’epo, Refiloe and Rethabile.

He is survived by his wife ‘M’e ‘Mats’epo, his three children and four grand-children; Ts’epang, Mohau, Tlotliso and Lerato.

He will be laid to rest in Maseru on Saturday, 8th May 2010.

MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE
