The former Governor of the Central Bank of Lesotho, Mr.
Esselen Motlatsi Matekane, passed on in the early
hours of Thursday, 22nd April 2010, at
the Olivedale Clinic in Johannesburg, South-Africa.
Ntate Matekane was born on 28 September 1945 to Ntate
Motsoalisa Paulus Matekane and ‘M’e ‘Mateboho
Matekane, in Jaggersfontein, South Africa, where his
father was an evangelist. He was the second of seven
children (three boys and four girls).
He began his primary education in 1954 in Thabana-Ts’ooana,
Makaung, in the Mafeteng District and later attended
the Mafeteng Controlled Primary School. In 1966 he
obtained a Cambridge Overseas School Certificate
from the Basutoland High School, now known as
Lesotho High School. In 1967 he proceeded to the
University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland (UBLS)
in Roma, now known as the National University of
Lesotho, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts
in Economics. In his quest for more knowledge, he
furthered his studies at the Institute of Social
Studies (ISS) in Holland, where he obtained a Post
Graduate Diploma in Statistics and National
Accounts.
He first joined the Civil Service of Lesotho in 1971 in the
Ministry of Education. He was later transferred to
the Bureau of Statistics in 1978 where he worked
until October 1987.
Mr. Matekane joined the Central Bank of Lesotho in November
1987, as a Senior Economist in the Department of
Economic Research. In 1993 he was seconded to the
Ministry of Economic Planning to serve as Principal
Secretary, a post he held until 1997 when he
returned to the Central Bank. In May 1998, he was
appointed Deputy Governor of the Central Bank. A
year later he left for the United States of America
where he obtained a Post Graduate Degree in
Economics at the Columbia University.
He was appointed Governor of the Central Bank of Lesotho in
2001 and served in that capacity until 2006 when his
five-year term ended. Amongst his several
achievements, he will be dearly remembered for his
passion in taking the Central Bank to the people
through various strategies including radio
programmes such as “U TSEBA HAKAE KA MORUO OA NAHA
EA HENO?”
In 1971 Mr. Matekane was joined in holy matrimony with
‘Masabata Ts’enoli and the two were blessed with
three children: Ts’epo, Refiloe and Rethabile.
He is survived by his wife ‘M’e ‘Mats’epo, his three children
and four grand-children; Ts’epang, Mohau, Tlotliso
and Lerato.
He will be laid to rest in Maseru on Saturday, 8th
May 2010.
